Water testing in Cape Coral and Lee County

Water testing in Cape Coral, FL. Learn how lab water tests work, what certified results mean, and how to avoid sales visits that call a test free.

Before you spend money on any water treatment, find out what is in your water. A real test gives you facts. It also keeps you from buying equipment that does not fit the problem.

Lab testing and certified results

A lab test means a sample goes to a laboratory that is certified to run those tests. In Florida, look for a lab certified under the state's environmental laboratory program. You get a written report that lists what was tested, what was found, and the units. That report is something you can keep, show to a second installer and compare over the years.

The lab or the person collecting the sample will tell you how to take it. Bacteria samples in particular need a clean bottle and fast delivery, so follow the directions closely.

What to test for

  • Hardness, which explains scale
  • Iron and manganese, which explain stains
  • Hydrogen sulfide or sulfur, which explains the smell
  • pH, which affects pipes and fixtures
  • Coliform bacteria on a private well
  • Nitrate, which matters on wells in some settings

What we do not do

We do not do "free water test" sales visits. You may know the kind: someone arrives with a few test tubes and a color change, and then presents a large system with a price that is only good tonight. A quick drop of chemicals at your kitchen table is not a lab result.

An honest installer gives a written flat quote, explains what each part does, and lets you think it over. If you are pressured to sign the same day, say no and ask for it in writing.

City water or well

If you are on a public utility, the real source for what is in your supply is the annual water quality report, called a Consumer Confidence Report. Your utility publishes it every year, and it is free. It does not cover what happens inside your own pipes, but it is where to start.

If you are on a private well, nobody publishes a report for you. A lab test is the way. Retest on a schedule or after flooding or work on the well.

What happens next

With results in hand, you can ask for a softener, a whole house filter, well water treatment or a reverse osmosis system that fits what was actually found. That makes quotes easier to compare.
